Life at the safehouse took a lot of adjusting to. While Kai and Glint had only let those they’d deemed friendly join the others, there was still a clear tension between Rebel Knights and Rebel Hunters. Both sides had hurled more than a few insults and punches. Trickshot and her healer apprentice, Brigan, had their hands full tending to each new black eye.

Meanwhile, Shaya did her best to calm the main aggressors down before things got worse. Still, there was a looming black cloud hovering over the entire safehouse:

Many of the Rebel Hunters, myself included, didn’t want any harm to come to her. I truly believed she’d changed. But the hate ran deep in the Rebel Knights’ blood. Princess Eliana had done her best to listen to both sides, but last I’d heard, the Knights were winning her over—and that wasn’t good for Vidya. Not that an ex-Hunter like me was privy to any real information on the matter.

Besides the drama, I found the safehouse to be a truly fantastic place. The number of rooms in the log cabin seemed endless, from the three-levels-deep basement to the second-story attic. The sleeping quarters reminded me of the barracks, so I felt right at home sharing with Solvai and my other female squadmate, Edrea, as well as Trickshot and Shaya. At first, they’d put us in the same room as some female Knights, but after one of them got into a shouting match with Edrea the first night, they’d split us up.

Mom and Dad got their own room, though I hadn’t been to visit them since our conversation in the prison. I felt bad for the way I’d lashed out at Mom, but I was still angry with her. I needed more time.

But it wasn’t the sheer size of the cabin that impressed me most. It was the use of etherarchy. Ether-powered objects were everywhere, from the Lightwielder’s torches brightening the halls to the Woodweaving-infused crates that held and preserved Rhana’s endless pantry. Her defense system was the most elaborate I’d ever seen.

And the most personally relieving. Since coming to the cabin, I hadn’t felt the influence of my wraith even once. It turned out that Rhana was concerned with more than just physical threats, and had incorporated some kind of wraith-repelling barrier into her property line using ancient Guardian-era technology called ‘etherlocks.’ Even the nightmares about the Soul Reaper didn’t haunt me here. I still had the shard in my rift hold, but it now felt dormant.

Despite that, I felt a sort of emptiness inside as I sat with my knees tucked against my chest in the window seat of my shared room. Looking out, I saw the cindercone trees that matched the reddish-brown logs that made up the safehouse cabin. Off to the side was the clear blue lake just off the cabin’s west wall, and I could see the lush little island in the center. Nearly obscured by the island’s trees was a beautiful little chapel dedicated to the three goddesses.
